About this Recipe

Recipe from Set for the Holidays
Appetite for Random House, 2018

These adorable cookie recipes are easy to assemble and make fantastic host gifts. Fill the jars with everything you need to make homemade cookies, and the recipient can bake them whenever it is convenient. I’ve included three recipes that vary in colour, taste and texture, so giving the full set is even more generous! You’ll need a 4-cup (1 L) mason jar for each recipe.

Ingredients

Candy Cane Sugar

  • ½ vanilla bean
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 cups (300 g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp cream of tartar
  • ¼ tsp fine sea salt
  • ½ cup (125 mL) crushed candy canes

Holiday Oatmeal

  • ¾ cup (110 g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (100 g) packed dark brown sugar
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • ⅔ cup (115 g) chocolate chips

Chocolate Toffee

  • 1 cup (150 g) all-purpose flour

  • 8 oz (225 g) dark couverture/baking chocolate

Step by Step Instructions

Candy Cane Sugar

Step 1

Have ready a 4-cup (1 L) mason jar with a sealable lid. With a paring knife, split the vanilla bean open and scrape out the seeds into a small bowl. Add the sugar to the seeds and rub together to infuse the flavour.

Step 2

Sift the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt on top of the sugar and whisk to combine. Use a canning funnel to pour half of this mixture into the mason jar. Add half of the crushed candy canes and then top with the remaining dry mixture and crushed candy cane.

Step 3

If there is a gap at the top of the jar, crush a piece of coloured tissue paper and arrange it over the ingredients to keep everything in place. Seal the jar and include a tag with the following baking instructions:

Step 4

Stir ¾ cup (175 g) of unsalted butter, melted, and 1 egg in a mixing bowl. Stir in the entire contents of the jar until blended. Drop spoonfuls of the batter onto 2 parchment-lined baking trays, chill for 30 minutes and bake for 10 to 12 minutes at 350°F (180°C), until lightly browned at the edges. Cool on the tray and dive in!Step by Step Instructions
